Kiowa National Grasslands
Union County New Mexico
Part of a 4-unit, 263,954-acre grasslands-restoration project. Originally plowed for farming. Because of poor topsoil and other factors, it became part of the Great Plains dust bowl. Remote high prairie, some rolling hills reached via dirt country/ranch roads. A two-mile section of the SFT Cimarron Route has been preserved here in this largely revegetated national grasslands. Photograph shows grasslands with Rabbit Ears Mountain in the background.
This certified site of the Santa Fe National Historic Trail is a preserved 2 mi. stretch of the SFT Cimarron Route, identified by limestone posts. A horseback riding/hiking trail is found in the actual ruts.
