San Migeul County New Mexico
Built in 1886, this elegant, four-story, 270-room Queen Anne-style sandstone and wood hotel sits on a hill overlooking the 110-acre campus of the 200-student Armand Hammer United World College of the American West. Hotel tours are by appointment (505-454-1461).
Built by the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad, the Montezuma is the only railroad-era resort hotel in New Mexico. It hosted Presidents Grant and Hayes, and crown heads of Europe. Its hot springs lured Indians, settlers, soldiers and outlaws.
