Santa Clara and Hillside Cemeteries
Mora County New Mexico
The Catholic (Santa Clara) and Protestant (Hillside) cemeteries contain the headstones of many local residents of this old, yet once-bustling farming and ranching community along the BNSF railroad tracks. Cemeteries rest at the base of the north slope of a 6,930 foot high promontory known as Wagon Mound, a prominent Santa Fe Trail landmark.
In Santa Clara Catholic Cemetery is an extraordinary white marble tombstone of Santa Fe Trail freighter Charles Fraker (1841-1922). The cemetery may have been the burial site of 10 men who were traveling with the Santa Fe-bound stagecoach when attacked by Indians, in May of 1850.
