Raton Downtown Historic District

The Raton Historic District preserves 70 bldgs. The Victorian era centerpieces of the district (the Haven Hotel, Investment Block, Joseph Building, NY & Golden Rule Stores, Fred Roth Building, the Palace Hotel, Shuler Theater, the Coors Building and the Wells Fargo Building, all built in 1887-1913) occupy three blocks of First St. one block E of 2nd (Main) St. First Street also houses the AMTRAK Depot, visited daily by eastbound and westbound passenger trains from Los Angeles and Chicago, respectively.
These Victorian-era buildings reflected the prosperity generated by the presence of the Atchinson, Topeka, & Santa Fe Railroad whose arrival in 1879 brought about the demise of the Santa Fe Trail.
