Mora County New Mexico

Sapella Stage Station photo

The pitch-roofed Sapello Stage Station, a National Historic Landmark, sports a territorial style portal and resembles a well-preserved country inn. It sits in view 1/4 miles south of NM 161 (Scenic Byway).

One of two Barlow & Sanderson stagecoach stations in Watrous, the home of George Gregg, dates back to 1860. Santa Fe Trail ruts on the adjacent hill descend to the house. Just north of the stage station is one of the junctions of the Mountain and Cimarron Routes of the Santa Fe Trail.

Driving Directions: Sapello Stage Station (Greg's Tavern) is located about 1-1/2 miles SW of downtown Watrous, New Mexico. Take Interstate 25, Exit 364, turning left (NW) onto NM 161 (Scenic Byway). Go 0.5 mi., turn left onto gravel ranch road. Former stage station and tavern on left is now a private residence (no trespassing).
